System Design, Development, and Procurement
CALIFORNIA:
Microgrid Initiatives partners with Prosper Sustainably in Southern California to provide microgrid project design, grant writing, and procurement support services for multiple Native American tribes seeking sustainable and resilient energy systems and services. Representative California Tribal projects and engagements:
MINNESOTA:
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources engaged a Microgrid Initiatives team including EVS Inc. and the University of St. Thomas to design and engineer off-grid hybrid solar+LP microgrids for a pair of remote sites in northern Minnesota.
MARYLAND:
With a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Microgrid Initiatives led a multidisciplinary team including Schneider Electric, NC State University, Green Energy Corp., and PEPCO Holdings to design and test a community microgrid system to serve the Town Center area of Olney, Maryland.

MASSACHUSETTS:
Microgrid Initiatives led multiple community microgrid assessments funded by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center for projects in Eversource and National Grid service territories. Projects included:

Microgrid Initiatives led community renewable energy project initiatives and microgrid feasibility studies with grants from the New York Energy Research and Development Authority in partnership with Hitachi Consulting, Green Energy Corp, and TEMix Inc. Projects included:

Microgrid Initiatives performed an assessment of regulatory and legal issues affecting microgrid development in several North American markets for a major multinational technology company.
Microgrid Initiatives supported a major U.S. defense contractor in assessing market potential and developing a go-to-market strategy for its microgrid service offering.
Microgrid Initiatives led a combined heat and power (CHP) stakeholder engagement process for the Minnesota Department of Commerce as part of the State's CHP Action Plan process.
Microgrid Initiatives performed a regulatory assessment and literature survey for a multidisciplinary study of microgrid and district energy potential for the District of Columbia Department of Energy and the Environment.
Microgrid Initiatives led a multidisciplinary study of microgrid market potential and barriers to development for the Minnesota Department of Commerce.
CALIFORNIA:

- San Pasqual Government Complex Microgrid (commissioned 2022; expansion in progress 2024): Owner's representation, project management, and development support for campus microgrid including solar carports + battery storage + LP generation for San Pasqual Band of Mission Indians government center, police, fire station, and school/Red Cross shelter.
- Pala Community Microgrids (construction pending 2024): Owner's representation, project management, and development support for integrated solar + battery storage microgrids at eight (8) sites across Pala Reservation (Pala Administration Complex, wastewater treatment facility, fire station, Tribal law enforcement, utilities complex, fleet complex, fire station, and radio station).
- Rincon Solar+Storage Microgrids: Owner's representation, project development, financing, and project management support for five (5) solar microgrids and battery storage systems at the Rincon Band of Lusieño Indians, including (among others):
- Harrah's Resort Southern California Microgrid carport solar + vanadium redox flow battery microgrid
- Rincon Government Center Microgrid : solar carports + Li ion (Tesla) battery + paralleling diesel
- Rincon Community Microgrids : including carport solar + battery microgrids at Resort Area, Fire Station and fresh water well pumping station.
- Barona Community Microgrid (awarded 2023; in development): Owner's representative, project manager, and grant writer for U.S. DOE and California Energy Commission grants to support multi-facility microgrid systems at Barona Band of Mission Indians government and commercial facilities, including the Barona Resort & Casino, Barona Government Building, utilities facilities, and water and waste water treatment facilities.
- Tribal Energy and Climate Collaborative (TECC) (formed 2023): Microgrid Initiatives supports development and management of TECC, a regional climate and energy development alliance among members of the Southern California Tribal Chairmen's Association, and provided grant writing services to secure grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and California Strategic Growth Council.
- Tribal Pollution Prevention Project (Tribal P2 Action) (ongoing): Microgrid Initiatives supports pollution prevention assessments, reporting, outreach, and project management for this inter-tribal program focused on identifying and reducing emissions and discharge of environmental pollutants affecting air, water, and natural environments.
